An adventure through the Chilean landscapes.
Chilean Patagonia is one of the world’s most impressive and wild destinations. Travelers here encounter majestic glaciers, vast and enchanting national parks, and dramatic landscapes. Patagonia’s geography offers unforgettable adventures for nature-loving travelers and explorers.
And you should know that if you go to Chilean Patagonia, it will be an unpredictable experience, as the weather often reaches extreme conditions. That’s why trekking gear is so important. Even if you hike through difficult stretches, the scenery is definitely worth it, especially when you reach the northern region, where maitén, arrayan, and cypress forests cluster around turquoise lakes.
Patagonia is a must-see destination; that’s why we present a definitive guide to traveling to Chilean Patagonia, featuring the best places and activities to make the most of your trip.
Additionally, you can plan your trip by following the Patagonian Parks Route, which connects more than 17 national parks in a single tour.
1. Torres del Paine National Park.
Torres del Paine National Park is undoubtedly the most iconic destination in Chilean Patagonia. It boasts gigantic mountains, crystal-clear lakes, grasslands, and glaciers; these ecosystems are home to a wide variety of wildlife, including pumas, guanacos, rheas, and, of course, the legendary Andean condor.
To explore Torres del Paine, the shortest trek on a day tour lasts around 4 to 5 hours, but we’re convinced that one day isn’t enough to fully enjoy this destination. Accompanied by a local guide, we’ll visit several shelters and camps where we’ll meet more adventurous spirits who share our love for the South American landscapes.
Activities
-
W circuit:
This is one of the most popular trekking routes for hikers in the world, and you'll explore the national park's most notable mountain spots over a 4- or 5-day hike.
-
Circuit O:
This circuit represents a more challenging experience, and we recommend preparing a couple of months before the trip begins. The trail completely circumnavigates the Towers.
-
Grey Glacier:
Your body will need plenty of hydration to endure the trek ahead in The Andes. Try to carry at least two liters of water per day. If your expedition lasts more than a day, you can always refill your reusable bottle or a hydration bladder before your next daily activity. This way, you'll have the energy to continue and achieve your goal.
2. Perito Moreno Glacier
The Perito Moreno Glacier is 80 kilometers from El Calafate; although it’s actually located in Argentina, it’s very easy to reach from Chilean Patagonia.
The glacier will definitely be one of the most beautiful sights we could ever see; the ice stretches for approximately 5 kilometers and rises to 74 meters above the level of Lake Argentino. So, when we arrive, we’ll witness large blocks of ice breaking off from its icy wall and plummeting into the lake.
Activities
-
Glacier trekking:
The trek to the Perito Moreno Glacier is filled with other impressive landscapes; before walking across a vast expanse of ice, we'll pass through mountain trails, forests, and meadows that create beautiful horizons.
-
Boat trips:
Along with local guides, we will be able to navigate near the glacier. He will give us important information about Patagonian geography and we will admire the spectacular panoramic view.
3. Carretera Austral
The Carretera Austral runs through Chilean Patagonia from Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins. While driving along this road, you can enjoy views of rugged coastlines, fjords, verdant forests, and Patagonian glaciers. You can also enjoy various adventure sports here, such as rafting on the Futaleufú River in the Los Lagos region.
Because it is located in an area of extreme conditions, the highway’s roads are mostly gravel, so it is common to travel it in 4×4 trucks or on mountain bikes.
This road also connects to several national parks, such as Queulet, Hornopirén National Park, and the Rose Lake National Reserve.
