The Ecuadorian Andes are, of course, one of the world’s must-see landscapes, boasting breathtaking heights and a mystical relief that runs through South America. From snow-capped mountains to active volcanoes, countless biomes form thanks to this mountain range. Below, we find the diverse cloud forest; places home to a myriad of wild flora and fauna.
Exploring this terrain and exploring these landscapes is a dream for many; therefore, we want to help you plan a safe and enjoyable experience, as the Andes mountain range can present a number of challenges.
So, here’s a list of the essential items you need for hiking in the Ecuadorian Andes.
-
Wear appropriate clothing
Although we associate the Andes with a rather cold climate, you can actually experience variable and rapidly changing temperatures, so it's essential to dress in layers.
On the day you decide to visit any national park or Andean trail, you can opt for a light base layer, such as a moisture-wicking t-shirt, followed by a warm sweater that maintains your body heat and an outer layer such as a waterproof jacket and windbreaker.
The pants you choose should also be waterproof and windproof, so you don't freeze if the weather is very cold. Among the accessories you should bring are a cap, scarf, and wool gloves; however, a hat and a pair of UV-protective sunglasses to protect you from the sun on sunny mornings are also important, as a double burn from the sun's reflection on the snow is not desirable for anyone.
Finally, a pair of hiking boots that are comfortable and the right fit will be your best allies, especially if you're going to be hiking for long stretches.
-
A sturdy, good-sized backpack
Although you should bring several things, it's also not recommended to overfill your backpack; carrying that backpack during the trip will make your experience a little more difficult.
Ideally, choose a backpack with a capacity of 2 to 30 liters; this way, you'll have enough space to carry your essentials. It's also important that it's made of waterproof material. If not, waterproof backpack covers are available at various adventure or sports stores.
-
Make sure you bring plenty of water.
Your body will need plenty of hydration to endure the trek ahead in the Ecuadorian Andes. Try to carry at least two liters of water per day. If your expedition lasts more than a day, you can always refill your reusable bottle or a hydration bladder before your next daily activity. This way, you'll have the energy to continue and achieve your goal.
-
Food and energy bars.
Among the foods you should pack in your backpack, it's recommended that you choose complex carbohydrates and proteins, as the body digests them more slowly, generating energy over a longer period of time. Therefore, you can choose an energy bar with a granola and nuts base, perhaps with some chocolate and peanut butter.
-
Don't forget sunscreen.
Solar radiation can be quite strong at high altitudes in the Andes, especially in the mornings before the fog that often characterizes national parks settles. Be sure to bring a broad-spectrum sunscreen we suggest an SPF of 50 or higher a lip balm to prevent dry lips, and, as mentioned earlier, sunglasses with UV protection.
-
Navigation equipment is always useful.
Although most trails to Andean national parks are well marked, it's always wise to carry a few items to help you navigate. A GPS, which you can use on your cell phone, is a fairly simple and intuitive wayfinding method. However, you should keep in mind that not all areas have a good signal; there will be remote places where there simply isn't a signal. So don't forget to also bring a physical map of the area you're exploring and a compass.
-
A first aid kit.
Bandages, alcohol, painkillers, band-aids, and personal medications, should you need them, are always welcome in case you scrape your knee while climbing a mountain or in any other emergency. This first aid kit will be your best friend and that of your travel companions during your expedition in the Andes Mountains.
-
Multipurpose tools and accessories.
Among the essential hiking gear are a battery-powered headlamp with a 160 to 200-lumen output, a whistle in case of an emergency, and a multi-tool for completing tasks outdoors such as opening a can of food or cutting the stem off a wooden stick to build a fire will also be very useful.
-
A couple of additional considerations.
And as a final recommendation for your hiking backpack, a trash bag will be very useful, so you don't contaminate these beautiful landscapes with wrappers or waste.
It would also be very beneficial to bring a professional camera, so you can capture all the beauty that exists in this type of landscape.
If you follow this short guide, you'll have a great time exploring the Andes Mountains and enjoy the adventure to the fullest.
